In 1975, BMW introduced the first generation of the 3 Series, the BMW E21. This model series succeeded the BMW 02 and set new standards in the compact class. The BMW 320i (E21) was heavily influenced by designer Paul Bracq and engineer Bernhard Osswald, impressing both on the road and on the racetrack. The BMW 320i featured a powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 125 horsepower and reaching a maximum torque of 165 Nm (121.7 ft-lb). With its precise steering and well-tuned suspension geometry, this model was highly popular among sporty drivers.
The BMW 320i (E21) was a technological marvel. Equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and MacPherson strut front suspension, this car offered agile handling. Another highlight was the disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear axle, providing excellent stopping power. With an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in around 9.8 seconds and a top speed of approximately 190 km/h (118 mph), the 320i was a serious contender in its class. It's also worth noting the use of aluminium components in the engine to reduce weight and increase efficiency.
In motorsport, the BMW 320i (E21) demonstrated its true strength. Notably, the memorable victory at the 1977 Eifelrennen in Division 2 of the Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterschaft (DRM), where car #15, driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck, shone. The car was piloted by numerous successful drivers, including Ronnie Peterson and Eddie Cheever, achieving top placements in many races. The combination of technical expertise and driver skill made the BMW 320i (E21) a legendary competition vehicle.
The model car presented here in a 1/18 scale was produced by Minichamps and represents the famous BMW 320i (E21) #15 with impressive attention to detail. Made of die-cast material, it impresses with its sturdy construction and accurate replica of the original vehicle. The model is painted in a striking orange color, just like the real racing car. The primary sponsor's branding of Jägermeister is prominently displayed, as are the additional sponsor logos of Castrol and Goodyear.
