BMW Vision Next 100 : What is the joy of driving in the future?
In the not-too-distant future, the majority of the cars are likely to be completely autonomous. People will move in robots on wheels. What is the reason for the existence of BMW Automobile?
A brand focussed on people, which is about driving pleasure. How to transfer their values into the future? In the development process of the BMW Vision Next 100 it was crucial that the driver did not enter into an anonymous means of transport, but into a very personal one that was completely aligned with him. In the future, there will be an emotional connection between a BMW and its driver.
In the development process of the BMW Vision Next 100, the BMW Designteam considered all the trends and technologies that are most relevant to BMW in the coming decades. And, of course, it has been inspired by the innovations and the design of the past. The decisive factor here was always the BMW's typical ambition to look forward without compromise to technology and customer benefits.
Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design: "If you can imagine something as a designer, there is a great chance that it will be a reality. For this reason, we have tried to design a future scenario with the BMW Vision Next 100, which we would like to see. The technology will develop strongly. This opens up fantastic new possibilities, which support the driver even better and thus enhance the driving experience. I am convinced that technology must be as intuitive as possible, so that the interaction of man, machine and environment can function in the future as if from a single mold. With the BMW Vision Next 100 we are designing this future. "
A real BMW always puts the driver at the center of attention.
The latest trend in the automobile industry has so far been so widespread that it is no longer the question of the "Ob", but only about the "when": autonomous driving. The BMW Group also expects the BMW driver to be able to leave the car to his car in the future. By request! Because the vision vehicle remains a true BMW, with which the joy of driving can be experienced intensively. Artificial intelligence and intuitive technology become one.
The car of the future will be fully networked. Digital technology is so self-evident that it has penetrated into almost every area of life. This will lead to the fusion of the digital and the physical world. A learnable artificial intelligence will anticipate many of our desires and will perform delegated tasks in the background.
As a result, the interaction between humans and technology is changing fundamentally. Screens or touch screens are replaced by more intuitive forms of communication and interaction between man and machine. Or better, the technology becomes more human. New materials create breathtaking possibilities.
How will we build cars in the future? Presses that punch 100,000-fold steel parts could eventually be a thing of the past. The use of carbon could be seen as a first sign of the deep change in the material and production worlds in the automotive industry.
Technologies such as Rapid Manufacturing and 4D printing, which produce not only components and objects but also intelligent, cross-linked material, could soon replace conventional tools and open up unimaginable possibilities in design and construction. Mobility remains an emotional experience.
A BMW automobile has never been a purely expedient invention to overcome distances. Always look at the next curve, feel the power of the engine or the drift of the speed - cars enable a sensual experience, an adrenalinkick or the intimate moment to travel alone or with familiar persons. This will not change, because mobility as an emotional experience is firmly embedded in our collective memory. The BMW Vision Next 100 will strengthen this experience by continuing to focus on the driver as a driver - in a manner unknown to date.
BMW Vision Next 100: a vehicle for the mobility of the future.
Digital intelligence makes the driver the "Ultimate Driver"
Alive Geometry "provides intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle
Driving modes "Boost" and "Ease" enable self-propelled and piloted driving
"Companion": Intelligent companion as a connection between the driver and the automobile

Materials of the future Digital intelligence makes the driver the Ultimate Driver.
With a BMW, the driver still wants to drive mainly in the future. The BMW Vision Next 100 will continue to focus on the driver in the future. Continuous networking, digital intelligence and state-of-the-art technologies only support him. What is more, he becomes the perfect pilot, the Ultimate Driver. The world will change, but the joy of driving will remain - more intense than ever before.
The starting point of the design process was the interior. The well-being of the driver will become increasingly important in the future. He is to be given the feeling to sit in a machine designed for him personally, which is not only autonomous. This results in an architecture in which the cabin is particularly generous compared to the complete size of the vehicle. At the same time, the BMW Vision Next 100 is unambiguously recognizable as a BMW. Despite its dome-shaped interior, it looks like a BMW sedan over the sporty and BMW typical silhouette.
The design of the interior should allow different driving modes: the self - propelled - boost mode - and the dangling - ease mode. In the Ease mode, the driver can lean back and drive. The vehicle offers him a retreat, with plenty of space, pleasant light and an appealing feel. In Boost mode, he drives himself. The machine supports him in a very subtle and intuitive way. At the same time, she gets to know the driver better and better, a sensory and digital intelligence, which the BMW Group calls the Companion. The Companion learns to support the driver better and better - the BMW Vision Next 100 makes the driver the Ultimate Driver.
A particularly important element of the vision vehicle is the Alive Geometry - something that has never been seen in the car. It is a kind of three-dimensional sculpture that works in the interior as well as in the exterior. Alive Geometry provides driver-to-vehicle interaction.
Alive Geometry is almost 800 moving triangles, inserted into the instrument panel and parts of the side panel. They act like a sculpture and communicate by movement in a very direct, direct way with the driver. It corresponds rather to a gesture and does not have the flatness of a display. The rider takes even the smallest movements in the edge of his field of view. Together with the head-up display, we have a unique blend of analogue and digital.
In a common movement like a flying bird flock, the moving triangles form easy-to-understand signals for the passengers. In conjunction with the digital display by means of the contact-analogue head-up display, this results in a form of pre-conscious communication. We receive an intuitive signal immediately before a real event. Approaches that such a thing will be possible can be seen clearly in this day and age. The topics of rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing are becoming more and more important every day. The assumption is that this technology will be widespread in 30 years. Today, it is difficult to imagine how the coordination of hundreds of small triangles should work, but this will not be an obstacle in the future. How we build cars today will no longer be the standard. More complex, more flexible forms will be possible. The BMW Group therefore also speaks of the 4D pressure in the BMW Vision Next 100, because of the expansion by a fourth functional level. Because the printed parts take over functions, which still have to be specially designed, produced and added today.
At the moment, the digital world is connected with displays. The next step is organic LEDs, ie free-form displays. The thesis in the Visionsfahrzeug is, however, that there will be no more displays in the car, this is replaced by a huge display directly in front of the driver: the disc, which is completely played. In the future, there will be a strong entanglement between digital and physical world. This is also expressed in the Alive Geometry, for example, by the analog dashboard interacting with the digital head-up display in the front window. Driving modes Boost and Ease enable self- and pilot-driven driving.
Both in the boost as well as in the Ease mode, all relevant elements and technologies in the vehicle bring about a maximum intensive or relaxing driving experience. Switching from one mode to another is an impressive, staged experience. The Alive Geometry also plays an important role in the driving modes: in the boost mode, when the driver is fully concentrated on the road, it forms for him, for example, an ideal line, an inflection point or a warning signal on the coming vehicles. This is not to drive primarily faster, but simply noticeably better. The intuitive gesture also acts more physically and more directly than a robot voice or instructions on a screen. In the Ease mode, the Alive Geometry moves more cautiously, informing the passengers about driving situations such as the road, acceleration or braking.
In boost mode, the entire vehicle focuses on the pilots and supports them by intelligence for maximum driving experience. In addition to seat position and steering wheel, the position of the center console also changes. It is more oriented towards the driver. This can interfere with gesture control while driving.
The contact-friendly BMW Head-Up display of the future uses the complete front screen for communication with the driver. In the boost mode, the technological expertise of the BMW Vision Next 100 only focuses on what is really relevant to the driver. Among other things, the driver sees his ideal line, steering points and the optimum driving speed. The head-up display generates a digital image of the environment through comprehensive networking, intelligent sensors and continuous data exchange. For example, the driver gets important information - for example, crossing vehicles before they appear in his field of vision. The driver's support is greatly reduced, discreet and individual. The system is constantly improving by learning more about the driver. A personal and intensive driving experience is always the focus.
When changing to the Ease mode, the entire atmosphere changes in the interior: the steering wheel and the center console retract, the headrests swivel to the side, creating a relaxed and homely atmosphere. The seats form a unit with the door panel so that the driver and the rider can lean slightly and face each other. This relaxed attitude also allows for more comfortable communication. The contact-analogue head-up display now supplies the passengers with individually prepared content, informs and maintains it as required.
While the focus in the boost mode is concentrated on what is essential for the driver, the Ease mode directs the attention, depending on the environment and mood, to the impressive landscape.
Whether the car is in the Boost or Ease mode is visible to all traffic users: the typical BMW kidneys are transformed into a communication tool together with the brand-name double headlights and the L-shaped rear lights. They illustrate, among other things, the color of the light in which mode the vehicle is located. Companion: Intelligent companion - connection between driver and automobile.
A small sculpture symbolizes the Companion - the connection between driver and automobile. The sculpture has the shape of a large polished gemstone and sits centrally under the front disk on the instrument panel. The Companion visualizes the intelligence, networking and serviceability of the BMW Vision Next 100. At the same time, it symbolizes a continuous exchange of data. He is constantly improving his experience with his owner and his mobility habits. In doing so, he takes care of everyday things for himself and gives suitable recommendations. Irrespective of the actual vehicle, it becomes more and more valuable to its owner.
The Companion also plays an important role in the communication between the driver and the vehicle during the transition from the boost to the Ease mode. As long as the full concentration of the driver of the road belongs in the boost, the Companion remains flat in the instrument panel. When handing over responsibility from the driver to the BMW VISION NEXT 100, he rises and connects himself to the windshield. A corresponding light signal shows the driver the readiness for fully automated driving. The Companion assumes a similar function with respect to the vehicle environment and other road users. They recognize the fully automated driving mode on their lighting in connection with the lighting staging of the vehicle. In certain traffic situations, the Companion provides an optical feedback to traffic participants and, for example, signals pedestrians through a green light path in the front, in which direction they can safely cross the road. BMW typical exterior.
A sporty coupe and a dynamic and elegant sedan - this combination characterizes the BMW Visions vehicle. With a length of 4.90 meters and a height of 1.37 meters, it has compact exterior dimensions, in contrast to the interior, which measures the dimensions of a BMW luxury sedan.
Large wheels placed far from the body make the vehicle dynamic on the road like a typical BMW. In terms of aerodynamics, an optimal effect has been achieved with the help of the Alive Geometry: the body covers the wheels, while adapting to the wheel movements as a stretchable skin. The new vehicle design results in an extremely low air resistance coefficient (cw value) of 0.18.
Copper as an exterior color of the vision vehicle underlines the idea that the automobile BMW future should have a technological effect, but also radiate heat. This symbolizes the close connection between vehicle and driver.
This connection starts at the moment the driver is approaching the vehicle: Intelligent sensor technology opens the wing doors automatically. For easy entry and exit, the steering wheel is flush into the dashboard. The driver takes a seat and activates all vehicle systems by touching the BMW logo in the instrument panel. Now the door closes, the steering wheel turns off automatically and the driving experience begins.

Materials of the future.
For the BMW Vision Next 100, the designers preferably used recycled material or renewable raw materials. All visible and invisible carbon parts - for example, in the side panel - consist of residual material from normal carbon production. In future, the selection of materials in the design and production process will become increasingly important.
Other and new materials will be added. This will also change the shape of the vehicles. In terms of sustainability and resource conservation, the use of wood and leather will be reduced and gradually access to new materials and possibilities in design and production. High-quality textiles, easily recyclable monomaterials and the complete renouncement of leather in the interior of the BMW Vision Next 100 are already suggesting this today info : https://www.bmwgroup.com/de/next100/markenvisionen.html#BMWhttp://www.bmwgroupdesignworks.com/news/100-years-bmw/
