BelAZ-540A is a Soviet heavy-duty dump truck for transportation of soil, overburden and ore at construction sites and quarries. Work on a new heavy-duty dump truck designed to replace the outdated MAZ-525 began in the newly created design bureau of the Belarusian Automobile Plant in Zhodino in the late 1950s. At that time in the world practice began to appear special dump trucks, which differed from classic dump trucks by the presence of a single cab shifted to the left, a large engine compartment on the right and a more rational body of a bucket type. All this made it possible to significantly increase the carrying capacity of such machines, increase their productivity, improve maneuverability, and also create a number of dump trucks with a prospective carrying capacity of up to 75 tons and more. The original and memorable design of the future car was designed by designer Valentin Sergeyevich Kobylinsky. The first prototype (having four headlights) was built at the plant in 1961. He can be seen in the famous Soviet comedy film "The Queen of the Gas Station" (1962). Having successfully passed the tests, the new BelAZ-540 was recommended for production, which began in 1965. In 1967, the release of a more advanced modification of BelAZ-540A began. These cars were very popular all over the USSR, and were also exported. Production of the 540A model lasted almost two decades, until in 1985 it was replaced by a more advanced 30-ton model BelAZ-7522. The dump truck is operated on specially constructed roads. It was a truck with hydropneumatic suspension of wheels, combined hydraulic systems of the steering booster (GUR) and a body lift, a helical steering mechanism, hydromechanical transmission, pneumohydraulic suspension of the rear and front axles. The load was loaded up to 15 cubic meters of cargo.
