The VAZ-2104/Lada was produced in the Soviet Union with production continuing in Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It was a successor to the Avtovaz/Lada 2102. Production of the car was at the following car plants: Volzhsky Automobile Plant – 1984 – 2003; RosLada modification of VAZ-21045 with a 1.52 litre diesel engine)- 2002 – 2003, and IzhAvto In Izhevsk – from 2003 until 2012. The car was also assembled in Egypt and the Ukraine. The 2104 had an estate car body and was closely related to the 2105 which was the equivalent four door saloon.
It was widely exported to Comecon bloc countries as well as the UK where it sold well and was called the Lada Riva, as it was in Yugoslavia. In Ecuador it was known as the Lada Classic. In Canada it was known as the Lada 1500, as it was in Columbia , but was also badged as a Dennis – or Lada – Signet. It was a Lada Nova in Denmark and West Germany, a Lada Kalinka in France, East Germany, Portugal and Spain. It was known as a Lada Laika in Argentina and Brazil. Finally in Cuba, where many were exported to, it was known as the Lada Sputnik. The badge making department must have been one of the busiest in the factory
The numbers made, and long production period of 25 years, of this estate car were due to its practicality, low price, and suitability for operation in the rough road and weather conditions in Russia and its satellite countries. The expensive prices, and limited numbers, of imported competitors also played a part. In all over a million of the Lada 2104s were produced.
There were a number of variations produced over the 25 years with the main changes being the various engines; petrol and diesel which were used over time, as well as different gearboxes. Cosmetic changes took place often driven by the higher specifications needed on export cars.
