The Lada 1200, also known as VAZ-2101, was a model introduced in 1970 by the Soviet car manufacturer AvtoVAZ. This first generation of the Lada 1200 was produced until 1984 and is considered one of the most successful car models in the Soviet Union. The VAZ-2101 was a licensed copy of the Fiat 124 and had many similarities in construction and design. However, the Lada 1200 was adapted to the specific requirements of the Soviet market. The car had a robust 1,198 cc (73 cubic inches) four-cylinder petrol engine producing 60 hp, a manual four-speed gearbox, rear drum brakes, and front disc brakes.
The Lada 1200 had the typical rear suspension of the time and a simple but effective leaf spring setup. With a top speed of around 140 km/h (87 mph) and an acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in just under 23 seconds, the car was quite attractive for the market back then. Interesting facts about the vehicle include modifications to the suspension and rust protection specifically developed for the harsh winter conditions in the Soviet Union. The design of the Lada 1200 was simple and functional, with the distinctive front end featuring round headlights. A notable technical feature was the safety steering column, which aimed to prevent intrusion into the interior in the event of a collision.
The model of the Lada 1200 in 1/18 scale shown here was produced by IST / Cars&Co and presents a detailed replica of this historical vehicle. However, it is important to note that this is a modified miniature model and was not originally produced by the manufacturer IST / Cars&Co in this form. The unique features of this model, as seen in the pictures, include great attention to detail, with an authentic paint job and the "Volkspolizei" labeling. The special white and green paint scheme, along with the decals and accessories like the blue light and loudspeaker on the roof, reflect the appearance of a former East German Volkspolizei patrol car.
This 1/18 scale model car was custom-modified for the collector "Lilisred," making it a unique rendition of the Lada 1200. The standout features include functional blue lights and intricate body details. The front of the model displays the iconic round headlights and a faithfully replicated grille. Even the small elements like the door handles and side mirrors are accurately reproduced. This modification sets it apart from standard models and adds visually appealing and technically impressive details that will resonate with model car enthusiasts. Lighting effects and precise replication of decals and paintwork make this model a standout piece in any model collection.
