The Innovation of the BMW E1

The original on which this 1/43 scale miniature model is based is the BMW E1. This vehicle represented a significant innovation in automotive history when it was first presented at the IAA 1991. Developed under the leadership of Ulrich Bez, the BMW E1 was conceived as a concept car with the goal of creating the vision of an environmentally friendly electric vehicle. The BMW E1 belonged to the first generation of electric concept vehicles produced from 1991 to 1993. It was a small, two-seater city car developed based on the BMW Z1, but with a completely independent technical setup and design language.

Technical Data of the BMW E1

Technologically, the BMW E1 was a pioneer. It was equipped with a 32 kW electric motor that drove the front wheels and could reach a top speed of around 120 km/h (75 mph). With its nickel-cadmium battery, the BMW E1 had a range of about 200 kilometers (124 miles). One of the innovations of the BMW E1 was the regenerative braking system, which helped recharge the battery with every braking action. It is important to mention that the BMW E1 had an aluminum chassis and plastic bodywork, resulting in a total weight of only about 900 kilograms (1,984 pounds). The vehicle had a very low coefficient of aerodynamic drag (cw value), which also contributed to the efficiency of the electric drive.
