The Trabant Kübel NVA is a prime example of East German engineering and was mainly used in the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR. Manufactured by VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau, the Kübelwagen was based on the well-known Trabant model and was a special military version that was in reliable use from the 1960s until the end of the GDR in the early 1990s. The name "Kübel" refers to the bucket seat construction, specifically designed for military purposes. The Trabant Kübel NVA offered higher off-road capability and robustness compared to its civilian counterparts, making it ideal for various military transports and patrols. The vehicle frame is made mostly of Duroplast, a reinforced plastic material known for its lightweight and durability. Technically, the Kübelwagen was powered by an air-cooled two-stroke engine with 26 horsepower, drawing from a displacement of 594 cm³ (36 cubic inches). The top speed was around 100 km/h (62 mph), sufficient for military operations. Its predecessor was the Trabant P50, whose basic structure was adopted and militarily optimized for the Kübelwagen.
