The Plymouth Road Runner was produced in its second generation between 1970 and 1971. This generation was characterized by a more angular design and a more aggressive front end that set it apart both visually and functionally from its predecessor, the original Plymouth Road Runner from 1968. Designed under the leadership of Jack Smith and John Herlitz, the latter took charge of the exterior design and ensured that the muscle car had a distinctive silhouette and a powerful presence on the road. The Plymouth Road Runner of this generation featured powerful engines, with the 383-cubic-inch V8 engine and the 440-cubic-inch Six-Pack being particularly noteworthy. These engines provided the vehicle with outstanding performance and gained popularity among muscle car enthusiasts.
