The Original: Cadillac Miller-Meteor (1959–1960)

The Cadillac Miller-Meteor was a luxurious ambulance and hearse produced from 1959 to 1960. These limited vehicles belonged to the third generation of the Miller-Meteor and were built from the ninth generation of Cadillac, which was in production from 1959 to 1960. The Miller-Meteor company was formed through the merger of the Meteor Motor Car Company and A.J. Miller Company and was well-known for its custom builds on various base vehicles. The Cadillac Miller-Meteor is often considered one of the most iconic hearses and ambulances of its time. Under the hood was a Cadillac V8 engine paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, delivering impressive performance. Technical specifications of the vehicle include a 6.4-liter (390 cubic inches) V8 engine producing around 325 horsepower and a top speed of approximately 160 km/h (100 mph).

A Glimpse into the History of the Original Vehicle

In 1959, the first production year of the Cadillac Miller-Meteor, several significant events took place that reflect the time. The famous single "Mack the Knife" by Bobby Darin soared the charts, and in politics, there were major developments as Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba. These examples illustrate the historical context in which the Cadillac Miller-Meteor was developed. The vehicle features some unique aspects, including a special ventilation system for patients or occupants and additional chrome details on the body. This combination of innovative technology and stylish design made the Cadillac Miller-Meteor a remarkable vehicle of its time.

The Model Car and Its Connection to Movies and TV

The featured model of the Cadillac Miller-Meteor is particularly known for its role in the cult film series Ghostbusters. In this film, first released in 1984, the ghostbusters use the vehicle to transport their equipment and reach the locations of their ghost-hunting missions. The iconic vehicle, often referred to as Ecto-1, was driven by the characters Dr. Peter Venkman (portrayed by Bill Murray), Dr. Raymond Stantz (played by Dan Aykroyd), and Dr. Egon Spengler (portrayed by Harold Ramis). They used it to hunt ghosts in New York City and gained fame with it. The white paint with red stripes and the distinctive Ghostbusters logo on the side make this model an instantly recognizable and popular replica among collectors and fans of the film. Every detail of the Ertl model car in 1/18 scale has been carefully designed to closely resemble the original, including the extensive equipment on the roof of the vehicle.
